Our cruise around the islands of the Indian Ocean was coming to an end. There are only a couple of days left and the fairy tale will end. From Reunion Island, our snow-white liner Costa Mediterranea headed for Mauritius. The next morning the ship was already in the port of Port Louis.
We had the whole day and night to spare. The next morning, before 10 o’clock, the cabin had to be vacated to clean and prepare the ship for a new cruise. Costa offered several excursion options. But since we had already visited a lot before the cruise, we decided to go somewhere to the beach on our own. The choice fell on the village of Grand Be.
Grand-Baie
Grand Baie Beach is located in the north of the island. Some people call it Grand Baie, but the guide told us that the locals pronounce the name of the fishing village as Grand Baie.
Now it is a large resort with numerous beaches, one of which we arrived at.
There are surf beaches with good winds.
But we needed a beautiful and quiet place to relax.
How to get to Grand Baie
There are not many options, only two:
- Taxi
- Bus
For convenience you will have to pay the taxi driver at least 100 euros there and back, if you can negotiate this amount. Sit straight in the car at the exit from the cruise port.
The bus option is a little more difficult, you will have to walk a little. From the cruise port, it is not so easy for a tourist unfamiliar with the area to find his way to the bus station on his own. At least the first time. I have an excellent visual memory and easily found my way back.
I’ve attached a map, I think it’s nothing complicated.

We didn’t know anything at all. We asked passers-by along the way.
It is useless to ask taxi drivers for directions, you understand why. This is their bread.
At the bus station, be sure to ask for the bus “Express Grand Baie“, his parking lot is a little further, in the depths of the bus station. It is quite comfortable, with air conditioning and moves no slower than a taxi. And most importantly it costs approximately 1.5 euros for two people one way.
Since our cruise was ending, we didn’t have much extra money, we spent it.
We chose the second option and were very pleased.
We got off at the final stop and an incredibly beautiful beach opened up in front of us.
City beach of Grand Baie
Gran Be Bay, where the beach of the same name is located, is well sheltered from the waves from the ocean.
The shore is sandy and the entry into the water is excellent.
You don’t need to walk half a kilometer to get to your neck, but at the same time there is no sharp cliff.
In general, everything is as it should be for swimming.
It’s completely calm here.
Water emerald green color.
On the shore, coniferous trees provide wonderful shade. But there are needles everywhere. True, they are long and soft, and do not prick the legs at all. There are palm trees a little further, but we decided not to go there.
I sailed from the shore, taking my new compact video camera, and filmed the beach from the water. What a beauty!
Beautiful yachts and catamarans decorate the general plan of the bay.
You experience incredible pleasure even just from being here.
I tried to dive, but the water is not clear as milk.
Numerous excursion catamarans in the morning and afternoon raise fine sand from the bottom
Hence the opacity. But these are all such little things…
Swimmed, sunbathed, had a blast!
Opposite the beach there is a small supermarket where you can buy something to eat, water and drinks.
Mauritian Phoenix beer tastes quite good and costs about 2 euros per can. Which is not even very expensive for a resort. In general, there are excursions around Mauritius.
Having thoroughly enjoyed the “seal holiday” we went back. It gets dark early in Mauritius, I didn’t want to wander around in the twilight. Thus passed the final day of our fifteen day cruise.
The next day at lunch, our plane headed first to Rome, then to Moscow.
Epilogue
I already wrote that I have never experienced such a cruise, or indeed a trip in general, in my life. This cruise is completely different from a voyage around Europe. He’s just special in his own way.
I suspect something similar can be expected on a Caribbean cruise and some Asian itineraries. We are thinking and making plans in this direction.
I also expect a lot of impressions. True, different, but no less pleasant.
