I am often asked about the cost of a sea cruise. We have to explain that there are several factors that influence the pricing of a voyage. This is the cruise line, ship, route, duration of the trip, season and of course the type of cabin (cabin) you will want to stay in.
What types of cabins are there and what is their difference we will talk to you today. Depending on our choice, the price may increase significantly. And therefore we must clearly understand what comfort you and I will pay for.
Classification of cabins on cruise ships
Referring to cruise ships, it would be more correct to say — cabin category. But since categories may be called differently on ships of different cruise lines, we will combine the classification according to the main criteria: access to light and fresh air.
It’s worth noting right away that there are no absolutely bad cabins!
All types of cabins have:
- Sleeping places
- Bathroom, shower, hairdryer
- TV, safe, wardrobe, bedside table
- Room service
The cabin area can vary from 6 to 500 sq.m. Air conditioning throughout the cruise ship ensures a comfortable stay in every part of the ship. Conventionally, cabins can be divided into four main types:
- Interior cabin
- Cabin with window
- Cabin with balcony
- Suite
Interior cabin — budget option.
This type of cabin is located inside the ship and is available on all decks. The main difference is that there are no windows or a balcony. The lighting is artificial, fresh air is supplied through air conditioning.
Interior cabin– This is the most budget option. If the route involves mainly night passages from port to port, and during the day you plan to be on excursions, then this type of cabin is for you. You can save a lot.
Some cruise lines on new ships have an LCD screen in the interior cabins that simulates a window or balcony. You can see on it the current image from the cameras that are installed outside the ship. It gives the complete impression that you are looking out the window.
Cabin with window — average comfort.
If in your dreams you see yourself smoking through an open window or in the morning you hear the sound of the sea from it, then you must be disappointed. The window does not open! And you can smoke in strictly designated areas on the ship!
This type of cabin has both natural and artificial lighting. Fresh air flow is forced.
On some cruise ships, your cabin window may open onto the promenade deck. This means that your curtains will be closed at all times.
In terms of area, the cabin does not differ from the interior and standard cabins with a balcony. This type of cabin is slightly more expensive than an internal one. Since you can enjoy the views from the window.
Cabin with balcony — excellent choice.
The main difference between such a cabin is fresh sea air, a gorgeous view from the balcony, which means video and photography. A cabin with a balcony of a certain class has additional options. For example, you can order breakfast in bed.
Of course, the cost of this cabin is even higher, but as you understand, the perception of the cruise itself is different. On the balcony there are a couple of sun loungers and a table where you can have breakfast. There are railings and a plexiglass barrier, so you don’t have to worry about the safety of your child.
Suite — ideal option.
The most luxurious type of cabins, sometimes looking like a small villa. The suite is primarily distinguished by its large area and, as a rule, belongs to the highest category of cabins. For example, in the cruise company MSC Cruises, a suite is provided to members of the MSC Yacht Club.
Sometimes these are several rooms, and sometimes apartments on two floors. There is a large balcony or terrace, jacuzzi, swimming pool, butler service and much more.
Suite on a ship
As a rule, this type of cabin has additional options. This could be a welcome bottle of champagne, a visit to the SPA salon, a separate restaurant and meals, an advantage when boarding and disembarking, etc. More details about the privileges for yacht club members are described in the MSC Yacht Club article of the same name.
Double-tier suite
The cost of such a cabin can be several times higher than the cost of an internal cabin.
Special types of cabins
The most common types of cabins are described above. But I would like to add some more features regarding the design or layout of the cabins.
Single cabins (Studio stateroom). You can travel alone. There are special cafes for getting acquainted.
Staterooms with facilities for the disabled
Family Staterooms (Family Stateroom)
Connected staterooms. Twin cabins with a common internal door. Convenient for large families or groups.

On cruise ships there is a cabin for every budget. The choice is great and depends only on your preference. If you want to feel as cozy and comfortable on a ship as at home, then you should take a closer look at the suite-type cabins. Look for a more budget option – it is also available.
