The second day of our stay on the wonderful island of Mauritius was the most eventful. To make it so, a huge amount of preliminary work was done. We explored all the sights of the island and wanted to see a lot. And here local Russian-speaking guides helped us.
It was physically impossible to fit in the two remaining days to see everything. And as it turned out, it’s not necessary. Many interesting places are actually no different. Therefore, this particular route was chosen for the second day at Mauritius.
Sights of the island of Mauritius.
The Internet in our room was excellent both in speed and by distribution. There was enough for everyone. I contacted the guide on the first day, ours confirmed arrival, route and meeting time. At 9 am he was supposed to come for us minibus with guide.
In the evening we celebrated our arrival on the island of Mauritius quite well; we didn’t really want to get up and go somewhere. But having gathered our will into a fist, we got up and were in shape by the appointed time.
And the route passed through the most famous sights of the island:
- Cape Gris-Gris
- Waterfall and colorful sands of Chamarel
- Casela Nature Park
In addition, we visited something on the next and final day of our trip, but more on that later.
Cape Gris-Gris.
Having left our village Flic en Flac, what on the east coast of Mauritius, we headed south towards Cape Gris-Gris.
This is the only place on the island where there are no reefs skirting the coast.
That is why here the waves approach the shore without obstacles. Which is very beautiful!
We really wanted to see this with our own eyes.
Swimming is prohibited in this place, the danger lies not only in large waves, but also in currents that can pull into the ocean.
On the way we came across a very beautiful ledge in the lagoon. Narrow the rock goes into the ocean, and at the top there is an observation deck.
Cafe along the way
Charged with the energy of the ocean, we moved in the opposite direction. Another stop with beautiful views pleased the eye.
Here we bought our first souvenir, the Dodo bird, from local merchants , and drank coconut juice.
The Dodo bird was found only in Mauritius and was exterminated by people more than two hundred years ago.
She was quite large, could not fly and therefore became easy prey for humans and domestic animals animals.
Sad but true. Now it is one of the symbols of the island.
Waterfall and colorful sands of Chamarel.
You know, I had the feeling that I was just sitting in a 3D cinema. My brain simply refused to believe what was happening. Unrealistically beautiful!
After admiring the waterfall from two angles, we walked 100-200 meters and found ourselves in an equally interesting location.
Arriving at the place Chamarel, was fascinated by the simply fabulous nature! The savannah area with a hundred-meter waterfall reminded me of films about Indiana Jones, or something like that.
The trail leads through the jungle to an observation deck where it offers stunning views of the waterfall.
Seven-colored sands against the backdrop of the same savannah and mountains again put me in an inexplicable state.
On a small area of land, volcanic rock formed sands of different colors. How? Why? No answer.
I remember a couple of years ago, I published a photo of a cloud on one social network, it looked like an Olympic bear. There were so many comments that it was like photoshop, etc. I wonder what people will say about this?!
Time passed inexorably, and we still had to visit the huge natural park Casela.
Casela Nature Park.
I couldn’t even imagine how much area this park occupies. In total, on just 250 hectares. Mountains, plains, savanna, gorge. Representatives of the entire fauna of the island are collected here, plus animals brought from Africa. And all this in the wild.
Unfortunately, we were not able to cover everything, but we tried to see as much of the area as possible.
I really wanted to ride the Zipline.
This is a flight on a special cable across a gorge.
But it turns out we had to make an appointment in advance.
Sadness.
But in other respects they seem to have succeeded. Went through the pools with Japanese carp, bird enclosures. This is the beginning of the journey. Then we descended to the plain with enclosures of other animals. We took pictures with huge turtles.
We rode down a mountain, I don’t even know what to call it. In short on a special sleigh on rails takes you vertically up the mountain. Height decent, I think more than a hundred meters. Then you roll down the winding track.
Two control levers, gas and brake. It was precisely because both hands were occupied with the controls that I was forbidden to take a video camera with me. There are decent turns and for the first time I will say that it is a little scary. Having studied the route in at least 3 descents, it would have been much more comfortable, but then the effect OGO was lost! The view is certainly stunning.
Safari
After the descent we went on a safari. Along the way we looked into the enclosures lions and cheetahs. We tried local ice cream and sat down satisfied special bus.
A couple of impudent ostriches quite insistently demanded “yummy” and approached the bus.
At the end of the safari there was an enclosure with giraffes. Very cute creatures.
Slowly along the dirt road past grazing gazelles we drove deeper into the park. There were rhinoceroses, of course, they stood in the fence. We stopped close and freely communicated with zebras and ostriches.
And towards the end, a gorgeous-looking peacock performed a mating dance for us.
Our guide Lyudmila has lived in this country for a long time and along the entire route she conveyed very interesting information about the state, population, nature, and history of the island of Mauritius. This is very valuable! We thank her from the bottom of our hearts for such a fascinating excursion.
I found information about excursions on the website otkroymavrikiy.ru, and if you liked Lyudmila specifically, here is her WhatsApp number 23057667250.
Evening of the second day in Mauritius.
Having become quite hungry after a full day of sightseeing, we hurried to our apartment. A great dinner awaited us! We agreed with new friends Olga and Anton that they would buy meat, vegetables for barbecue, rum and beer. Picnic by the ocean.
We quickly ran into the room, rinsed off, changed clothes and quickly went to our friends. The meat was already marinated, the vegetables were trimmed, we grabbed a beer and headed out to the ocean.
It gets dark early in Mauritius, at 18 o’clock it’s already “at a glance.” The barbecue and table with chairs were brought, and the process began. We shared our impressions of the past day, ate, and enjoyed the views of the evening ocean. Unfortunately, due to the lack of any lighting, the photographs did not turn out.
And tomorrow we had an equally pleasant day on the beautiful Lemorne beach, a boat ride, dolphins, underwater photography, and in the evening we boarded the ship and went on a cruise around the islands of the Indian Ocean. But more on that in the next article. By the way, there is a similar, but even more intense sea cruise «Grand Voyage from South Africa to Europe».
