A corner of medieval Europe – the city of Bruges, Belgium

At 20 o’clock we sailed from France and the next morning our first stop was in the city of Bruges, Belgium. The ship docked at the local port of Zeebrugge, and we went ashore in a great mood.

I already wrote that I prepared very carefully for the cruise and studied at home all the options for excursions along our route.

In Belgium there were two main options, either Brussels or Bruges. Of course, first of all I considered visiting the capital. But for some reason I was not very inspired by the “pissing boy”, the town hall on the main square, and 2-3 other popular attractions a hundred kilometers from the port.

My teammates told me about Bruges, and the Internet is full of very positive reviews about this fabulous town.

Bruges, Belgium

From the port of Zeebrugge to the city of Bruges itself is only 17 km, but according to reviews, getting there is not very easy. We need to do a transplant, they advised some other options. In fact, it turned out to be very simple!

A free port shuttle takes you from the ship to the station building, and there are ticket offices in the station building. Special comfortable buses for 20 euros will take you there and take you back. For example, I’ll say that the same transfer by ship costs 50 euros.

We reached Bruges in a few minutes. Of course, we were already a little prepared for a fairy-tale city with medieval architecture, but in reality everything turned out to be much more beautiful.

Remember the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen? So we found ourselves in just such a fairy tale. Ancient houses, paving stones, a clattering carriage passing by, the sound of bells – it gives you goosebumps.

It seems that now the king and some Brundilda will pass by with his retinue. You can see and hear all this in the video below.

In the heart of Bruges, on Burg Square, there is a 14th-century town hall and an 83-meter bell tower from the 13th century. A carillon was installed in this bell tower in the Middle Ages. This is a mechanism that includes the chiming of 47 bells.

I’ve loved history since I was in school. It was a big emotional shock for me. Although I am sure that this town will amaze absolutely anyone.

Beautiful canals throughout the city complement the already magnificent panorama. Pleasure boats with tourists sail along some of them.

What is worth trying and what can you bring as a gift from Belgium? You will find the answer to this question on the streets of Bruges. Numerous shops that sell the same world-famous Belgian chocolate.

And you will also find shops and cafes offering equally famous Belgian beer.

Belgian chocolate

You will be amazed by the abundance and variety of varieties and forms of chocolate. White, traditionally brown, chocolate with various fillings and additives. Shape:

  • Tiles
  • Bars
  • Candy
  • Intricate figures

We bought everything to try and as gifts for loved ones.

Belgian beer

First we decided to try bottled beer. We went into the store and bought whatever we wanted. Great beer!

But I liked the live one on tap better. A large glass of 0.5 l costs an average of 6-7 euros. It really is a magical taste. I won’t even try to describe it, it’s pointless. Just take my word for it – I’ve never tasted anything tastier from beer drinks in my life!

Time flew by very quickly, the whole town was walked up and down. Bruges is about 2 km wide and 3 km long, or so it seemed to me.

Behind is Paris, and ahead are Amsterdam, Hamburg and London – cities with extraordinary history, culture and architecture. But still a Belgian city Brugesleft a very unusual and deep mark on my memory. This is definitely the city to which I will definitely return if the opportunity arises!

Next stop is the city of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.

I suggest without delaying time
