Despite the fact that maritime transport is statistically considered the safest, we still know several high-profile tragedies. I’ll tell you about one today for those who don’t know and remind those who have heard about it.
Why write about this, you ask? I think that people should know about this and not ignore the briefing procedure on a cruise ship before sailing.
There are people who, because of such rare cases, are afraid to go on a cruise. Well, at least it’s stupid. They are not afraid to drive the most dangerous type of transport, I’m talking about motor transport, but they are scared to drive the safest one. The logic in this case remains unclear to me personally.
Details of the incident
On the night of January 13-14, 2012, a shipwreck occurred in the Tyrrhenian Sea near the coast of the island of Giglio «Costa Concordia& #171;. This disaster claimed the lives of 32 people. In total, 4229 people from 70 countries, including the Russian Federation, were on board this cruise ship.
The captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, was found guilty of the crash and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. In addition, he was ordered to pay monetary compensation to 150 passengers who were injured during the shipwreck. Due to his negligence, he brought the liner too close to the shore, and the bottom of the ship was cut by the reef.
As a result, a hole 50 meters wide appeared in it. Water instantly flooded the engine room, after which the lights on the ship went out, and then the engines turned off. The ship became uncontrollable, and only thanks to a miracle it was not carried out to the open sea.
The captain got into the boat and left the ship while a huge number of people were on board. He failed to properly evacuate passengers, which led to the death of people. Many passengers managed to escape by swimming to the shore. The residents of Giglio provided them with first aid.
Duration of the last sea cruise made by the liner «Costa Concordia«, was only 2.5 hours. It is currently considered the largest shipwreck in history. Some compare the tragedy of the ship «Costa Concordia» with «Titanic», which sank a hundred years earlier. However, the uniqueness of this incident lies in the fact that the disaster did not occur in the middle of the ocean, but only at a distance of several tens of meters from land.
There is also an interesting fact that at the ceremony «baptism» famous fashion model Eva Herzigova was unable to break a bottle of champagne on its side, and this is considered a bad omen. Nevertheless, over the course of 6 years, the liner made hundreds of voyages along the coasts of Italy, France and Spain and brought its owner quite a good profit.
